Alberta Curriculum & Advanced Placement Courses

ALBERTA CURRICULUM

CAIS offers the renowned Alberta curriculum, and is accredited to provide studies leading to the High School Diploma qualification of Alberta Education, Canada. Alberta Education has earned the accolades of universities throughout the world due to the quality of students produced from its provincial and international schools. An international assessment, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) assesses 15-year-old students’ reading, mathematics, and science literacy every three years. In 2022, nearly 700,000 15-year old students, from 81 participating countries wrote The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test, which includes English, Mathematics, and Science.  This standardized tests provides a snapshot of student achievement by assessing literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, and scholastic performance.

In 2022, Hong Kong ranked 6th worldwide with an average score of 520.0, with Canada in 8th at a score of 506.3. Since CAIS participated in the 2022 test, our school report shows that CAIS students scored the exact same as the Hong Kong average in Math, higher than Hong Kong in the English component, and far higher than the Hong Kong average in Science.

On PISA 2022, Canada ranks as the highest predominantly English-speaking country in the world, and is followed by other popular study destinations amongst Hong Kong parents, including Australia (11th), the United States (18th), and UK (20th) with a score of 486.3.

Diploma & Credits Requirements

Students can begin earning credits in the Alberta Diploma Program in Grade 10. Upon successful completion of 100 credits, with at least twenty Level 30 credits, students will be awarded an Alberta High School Diploma.  For more information about Alberta Education’s Diploma Exams, you may visit the official website.

The Advanced Placement®(AP®) program is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools, colleges and universities. The AP® program supplements Alberta courses for Grades 11-12 students seeking further academic challenge. Successful AP® Exam completion positions them to qualify for credit transfer or advanced placement at many universities. Selected students may have the opportunity to write Advanced Placement® exams in May each year whether they have taken the instruction provided by the School or not. AP® Scholar Awards

The AP® Scholar Awards are presented to students demonstrating college-level achievement through AP® courses and exams. A certificate is presented and acknowledged on a score report sent directly to universities. Awards include:

  • AP® Scholar: For scores of at least 3 on 3 or more AP® Exams
  • AP® Scholar with Honors: For average scores of at least 25 on all AP® Exams taken,  and scores  of 3 or higher on 4 or more of these
  • AP® Scholar with Distinction: For average scores of at least 3.5 on all AP® Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on 5 or more exams
